Wickenburg
Henry Wickenburg was born in Austria in 1820. In 1847 he emigrated to the United States. 15 years later he found himself in the largely unexplored Arizona Territory. Joining a prospecting party led by Pauline Weaver, Wickenburg and others journeyed up the Hassayampa River. On a scouting expedition Wickenburg chanced upon what would become The Vulture Mine. With funds from his new claim he bought a ranch several miles from the mine. As the success of the mine grew, so did the new town of Wickenburg which supplied the miners at Vulture. After selling his interest in the mine Henry Wickenburg fell upon hard times. He died in near poverty in 1905 on his ranch in the town that now bears his name.
