Blakey Oil was a chain of service stations that Albert Monroe Blakely began in April 1949. By the time he sold to Gulf Oil Company in 1963, the Blakely name had become synonymous with give-a-way promotions that included cars, boats, trailers, kitchen ranges, dishwashers, and refrigerators as well as the Blakely glasses, china, and stoneware he is most remembered for.
In addition to Blakely Oil and Blakely gas stations, the Blakely family had numerous other enterprises including a creamery, a furniture store, car dealerships, Apache Airlines, and P.D.Q. Airways helicopter charter service, which is believed to be the first helicopter charter service company in Arizona. Albert Monroe Blakely was also an investor and board member of the original Legend City amusement park in Phoenix where he also owned the Blakely Sports Car Ride and two stores, including the Dipsy Doodle gift shop, which his wife Ruth operated. Monroe also had a TV show called "The Cisco Kid", which aired on Monday nights at 8:30 on KTYL-TV.
This Collection includes images of family members, businesses, and advertisements, highlighting the role that the Blakely family had on labor, commerce, and pop culture around Arizona from the 1900s through 1963.
